Duncan Stewart
Flower Mound - Ride Leader

Married 18 years, one daughter. She's learning to drive, but my wife and I may not live through it! "Clear the area!"

Hobbies BC (Before Child): woodworking, tennis, jazz concerts, playing the saxophone.

Hobbies AD (After Daughter): running (participation and mentoring), cycling, and more recently, yoga.

Discovered spinning and yoga and re-discovered outdoor cycling during down time from running injuries. Now I'm hooked!

LTF got me motivated to train for and complete the Hotter Than Hell 100, and I met a bunch of nice people along the way. I have been interested in sports and the great outdoors my whole life: fishing, hockey, waterskiing, alpine skiing, tennis, rollerblading, running and biking (motorized and non).

Running highlights:
Founded Flower Mound Striders. Four terms as President, two terms as CCO, now have Mentor status in the club (meaning I'm old!) Have run hundreds of races, including 37 marathons. PR's -- marathon 2:48:33; half-marathon 1:19:19; 15K 55:05; 10K 35:44; 5K 16:59.

Donielle Nyland
Flower Mound - Ride Leader

I've been competing and active in the fitness industry since the 80's. My 1st passion is in the outdoors racing up a mountain on my bike or on my feet. In 1996 I competed in my first adventure race. Since, I have traveled across the South region competing in 2-24 hour races each summer and fall. I placed 1st in some races....and 25th in others. No race is the same and a wrong turn, injured team mate, flat tire, etc. will challenge your finish time. A few years ago I decided to incorporate road biking into my training to build up my overall endurance. Once on the road, I began training with a team and quickly realized how much more I could learn and improve in my overall cycling.

My 2nd passion is indoors...I took my first Spinning class in 1995 and was hooked. As my outdoor and indoor training have continued to mold together, I decided to get back into teaching in hopes of bringing my outdoor experience inside the cycle room. I was certified in 1996 and recently took a position with LTF. My favorite part of teaching has been the opportunity in each class to either challenge a member to go beyond their comfort zone or find their place on a bike for the first time. I have met some amazing athletes in this sport and look forward to many more years on the pedal.

"This past weekend I took on the challenge to train on some hills in Muenster Texas. Muenster is a small Germany community located in North Texas. The ride was part of the Annual 3 day German Festival....34th year. The ride course is fast and challenging due to the continual rolling hills. (I had no idea how challenging this would be).

My day started at 7am. Had three pieces of toast and almond butter and an orange. Got my bike and headed over to the LTF to meet the rest of the club at 8:30am. We had close to a dozen members show up and all caravanned up to Muenster. Once we arrived the town was full of riders...1500+ is almost double the full population!

The ride kicked off at 11am...no real gun shot or loud "Ready, Set, GO...." it just kind of started and everyone was moving forward. I was with Chris and we were trying our best to get up front with the other 60 milers. We were slowed down by the crowd pretty quickly and took another mile to get any normal speed again. Chris requested that we "hammer it" for the full 60 miles..I said "great..lets do it."

The wind was pressing hard from the start. For the first 10 miles, the wind was on and off. This allowed for some pretty fun down-hills. But, this did not last for long. After mile 10 we were all starting to feel the added load from the wind on our legs. Chris's next words were, "Maybe that was not the best idea." I had no issue taking the "hammer" out of the challenge;-) I knew we were in for a tough ride.

I lost Chris due to a chain issue and caught up to Shawn. We paced each other for awhile and then I was back on my own. Miles 15-30 were pretty much the same...lots of hills and wind coming in and out. I was able to get on my headphones and zone out the wind. The pace-lines were pretty disorganized due to the risk of bikers being pulled and pushed by the wind. This made it hard to ride steady and I witnessed two accidents that were caused by bikes being pushed out of control.

My first stop was at mile 30. I reloaded my water bottles and hit the road. A few miles down we turned a corner...and BAM...Wind dead on..no break. Close to mile 40...I saw Keith. We ended up riding together to the end of the race. It was a brutal last 20 miles. The wind never gave up and we had 5 major climbs to get over.(I quickly lost my bet to Keith that we only had 2 more.) The worst one being at mile 50. Keith was an amazing climber and challenged me to not give up or slow down. We tried to draft off each other..but we gained little relief. On a couple down-hills we were only going 9 mph...ugh.

We got back to Muenster in 3 hours. I could not have been more eager to get off my bike. I have heard rumor that this was one of the hardest rides yet this season. I have to say, my legs would agree.;-)"
