W. Marty Smith
Coach Marty Smith loves to help people push through their perceived limits and conquer their athletic aspirations. Marty started coaching to help others feel the accomplishment, self confidence, and better health that comes with proper training for an endurance event. He continues to leverage his training and racing experience in addition to proven scientific training protocols to help others achieve their athletic potential in a balanced and enjoyable way.
Over an endurance racing career that started with a marathon in college 38 years ago, Marty has stayed injury-free and continued to stay at "the pointy end" using achievable and smart training plans, functional and sport specific strength training, and detailed race planning using power meter or heart rate pacing. He has a deep appreciation for efficient training and fully appreciates the tremendous challenge of balancing endurance training with a full-time job, family, and other commitments. Marty has great communication skills and is well known for transferring his knowledge and love of the sport to his athletes.
Coach Marty works with a wide range of athletes: from the true "newbie" to the experienced triathlete striving for a Kona qualification spot. He has the experience to identify an athlete's strengths and weaknesses and to develop specific training plans to optimize those areas. His athletes not only achieve their goals, but learn the "whys and hows" of effective, cutting edge endurance training.
Marty has racing and coaching experience in a variety of endurance and multisport events, and has improved from a "back of the pack" triathlete to podium finishes in Ironman triathlons and World Championship duathlons. He has raced at Kona and throughout Asia and Europe, and can share the proven methods and strategies he has used to keep "old age" at bay and stay healthy and motivated.
